Some desperately needed venting

Over the 3 months I've been on hiatus I had the chance to play 2 greatly anticipated Wii games, Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country Returns... I hated them both.

Goldeneye was just crap. It was very half-assed Call of Duty clone that had none of the spirit of the original game. Not even the multiplayer, which was supposed to be the main draw of the game. All I got out of this game were blurry graphics, terrible controls, and linear levels that are nothing but "hiding behind crates ans shooting enemies over and over".

Donkey Kong Country Returns wasn't any better. While it kept some of the original game's spirit, the game's awful controls screwed me at every turn. having to shake the remote to attack was the worst idea since the idea to revive this franchise without the original developers. The Wii remote is the most unresponsive piece of shit to ever curse gaming. DK never rolled properly and ended up getting hit by enemy, since he wouldn't respond to wiimote shakes.

Autopsy: Playstation 2

I was at the local flea market yesterday and I scored a broken PS2 and 2 Snes for 10$. Since the Ps2 was didn't work, I figured I'd take it apart to see what the insides were like. Surprisingly, they were similar to the Nes and Genesis in that all three consoles have the same basic design and metal shielding covering the motherboard.

Also I ordered the screwdriver for opening up the Snes, N64, and Gamecube, so expect more posts later.

I bought a Sega Genesis yesterday for 10 bucks at the flea market. I took it apart to advance my knowledge retro gaming consoles, think it was full of complicated parts and what not... I was wrong. It's just a motherboard. No connecting parts or anything. The whole this less complicated than an NES, and I learned absolutely nothing new at all. GODDAMN IT SEGA!!!

Sup. Haven't written anything meaningful here in awhile, so might as well talk about what I've been playing the past month.

Metroid Other M was disaster. Everything about this game sucked and I have never been this disappointed by a sequel since Dragonball Z Infinite World, and before that its been years. But anyway I don't want to talk about it so I'll just leave it at that.

I restored that NES I bought back in May to working condition finally. With it I played Ninja Gaiden for the first time since like 1994. I forgot how hard it was since I've been spoiled today's easy games that don't need a lot of skill. Except R-Type final of course...

Speaking of R-Type, I turned into a serious Shmuper lately. R-Types, Einhander, R-Type Delta, and Parodius take up a lot my time lately and there fun as Hell.

I'm home YAY! First order of business, Metroid: Other M... but I don't have it yet. Reviews seem to be generally positive, but a lot of reviewers bitch about the lack of a control stick or whatever. The game looks pretty fluid with just the D-pad, which is an impressive feat nowadays.

But anyway I don't have it yet so I'll talk about it when I get my jaded hands on it. Which is when I GET MY FREAKIN' PAYCHECK!

-Dragon Quest IX is a lot of fun.

-Goldeneye 007 has a classic mode where you don't have regenerating health and you can only pick up body armor, just like in the original game. So YES I will be buying it when it comes out.(hopefully)

-I've got some money coming to me soon so I'm buying Metroid: Other M ASAP.

So I read today that Nintendo announced that they've begun working on their next console. After I read that, I remembered them saying that their next console will be a "traditional" one. Then it hit me like a sack of PPPPFFFFF. Remember Nintendo's E3 conference? The one with all the awesome games people have been wanting since the Wii first came out, and the unveiling of what might be the greatest handheld console ever? Well I put all that together and realized that the Wii and DS was just a trap. Nintendo wanted a way to attract a new class of gamers and turn them into Nintenfags. The E3 conference was just a ploy to bring back all the old nintenfags who had given up on Nintendo and unite them with the new nintenfags. So now Nintendo has this massive army to make even more money off of.

Pretty sneaky Nintendo, but I'm to your plan for a return to video game dominance...

Final Fantasy XII : The Suckening

Final Fantasy 7 was the last mainstream Final Fantasy title that I'd played. I finally broke down and decided to buy the most recent FF title I could play, seeing as how I don't own a 360\PS3. So I grabbed FF12 from my local independently owned game store, and man was I in for a Shitstorm...

I can only think of one word to describe Final Fantasy XII, DICKS! This game is dicks. Who do these dickbag developers think they are, turning Final Fantasy into Generic Shit MMORPG. FF12 is like playing the Phantasy Star Online games' offline story mode. After about a few hours you realise the offline stuff blows anus and you realize the main focus is online and you never play offline ever again. Well FF12 is like that except THERE IS NO ONLINE MODE TO TURN TO AND YOU ARE FOREVER TRAPPED IN MEDIOCRITY FOR ETERNITY!

So by now you're thinking to yourself,"P-Dash why you hatin'!?" Well, here's why...

The battle system blows hairy orifice. No matter what Ragnarok players try to tell me, real time combat in an RPG is SHIT. The flow of battle in FF12 is like this:

-You see enemy

-To engage enemy you open the command window and instruct the leader(you) to attack the enemy

-The party runs with reckless abandon towards the enemy or enemy party.

-Gambits start taking effect

-All hell breaks loose

Now before I go any further I would like to go ahead and explain the Gambit system. The gambit system is like a programmable battle script for CPU controlled party members. It's SUPPOSED to help party members perform useful tasks in battle like healing or anything that makes your life easier in a combat situation, however it is fatally flawed. CPU character are COMPLETELY dependent on gambits. THEY DO NOT THINK FOR THEMSELVES! Enemies have a limited capacity to examine a situation and react accordingly. Your guys do exactly what gambits say regardless of logic or common sense. For example : you make everyone a gambit that tells the team members to cast cure when an ally falls below a percent of HP. Lets say you're in a boss fight with one boss an several other enemies. The instant an ally's HP gets low, everyone with sample gambit stops what they're doing to cast cure. The enemies beat everyone to death while they're casting. Then you realize you the last man standing with no healing items, and a big ass boss and his crew in your face.

-You feel like this

That's the problem, gambits make the party ignore everything to carry out the task even if it becomes no longer needed. Once its in the queue it will be done regardless. Of course you can turn gambits off and command the party yourself, but with the high enemy encounter rate this gets old fast.

And this is only scratching the surface of what's wrong with this game. I could be here for hours complaining about nearly every other aspect of the game like the overly powerful enemies and the shitty amount of EXP they give, or the entire concept of the license board. But I think I'll just leave you with this, If the original director of the game quit halfway through development, dosen't that mean there might be some a little wrong with the game?

Hi. Well, I managed to tear myself away from Dissidia : Final Fantasy long enough to do... something else. What can I say, it's the best final fantasy game I've played in years. I never cared for anything after FF6, and that was 1994! 16 whole years of disappoint.

Moving on, Marvel vs Capcom 3 is also coming to the Wii. That makes me actually care that it exists. However, it uses the 3 button system from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. I think it was a good system trapped in an mediocre crossover game full of characters nobody cares about. Though now that its in a game EVERYONE cares about, it'll be a hit for sure.(I just wish they made this instead of TVC cuz I feel kinda cheated, but this IS Capcom we're talkin' about...)

Ok back now. So old news; Nintendo's E3 conference was sex. 3DS gets ports of Metal Gear Solid 3 and Super Street Fighter 4, which is all I needed to hear. I'm on the fence about Goldeneye though, since they want to make it like modern FPS games with regenerating health and cutscenes and shit that makes FPS suck nowadays. EPIC SCRUTINY AHOY!!! Kirby's Epic Yarn, FUCKING DISAPPOINT NINTENDO, WHERE'S THAT KIRBY GAME THAT BROUGHT BACK HELPERS!?! Just as Sony and Microsoft get ready to do casual gaming Nintendo looks ready to move on...

New news; PSP is tops, period. The 3DS will probably be better, but until then, PSP! I bought Pangya PSP the other day and holy shit this game pleases me in a way I can't mention on the Internet. Yesterday I bought Dissidia Final Fantasy, and yes it lives up to the hype. I'm still getting my feet wet so more on that later.

Soul Calibur is dead to me. Broken Destiny brought back the pacing that made SC2 the best game, but all the characters I use are horribly nerfed, making this game hollow and "soulless".(HAR HAR)

No I'm not dead. I just have terrible internet now, and am horrendously lazy...But seriously though... stuff. Here's the(not) short version.

-I'm still bumming my way through Metroid Prime Trilogy. MP1 is still the best one, period. The Wii controls fix a lot of the clunklyness of the Gamecube version, but add a bunch of new Assholery that frustrates me to no end. The visor and beam select window is what sucks the most. Before all you had to do was press the d-pad or c-stick to change visors and beams, now you hold + and - which bring up a window with the icons on them. You then point the Wiimote at the appropriate icon, then release the button. The problem is the way the icons are arranged on the screen. It's like a triangle with the combat visor/power beam as a little circle in the center. It's very easy to select the wrong visor/beam because the window takes up the whole screen and it takes longer than it should to point at an icon, especially when your fighting a boss that requires you to switch between beams/visors quickly. And on top of all that the icons are symbols not words so I sometimes forget which beam/visor is which, and by the time I figure it out, whatever boss is beating the shit out me.

-I'm also playing Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2. Or as I like to call it BEST FUCKING GUNDAM GAME EVER! Why you ask? Simple, Musha Gundam.

-I bought and repaired an NES, but the game I got for it doesn't work... I think.

-My Nes cartridge screwdriver can't open up an SNES.

-I'm waiting for Super Street Fighter 4 to be released on the PC so my friend with the better computer can buy it so I can play it. Then I'll able to criticize it for still being not as good as Street Fighter Alpha 3.

-I don't care about Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I it will never meet my sky high expectations. I'll still play it though.

-I want Metroid: Other M. I dreamed I played it, and it was amazing. Therefore, it MUST be true

Yep. I went to Amazon.com today and bought a 3.8mm screwdriver bit for unscrewing Nes, Snes, Gameboy, Virtualboy, and Nintendo 64 cartridges.(Only 4.95 + tax) Also tomorrow I plan on heading to the nearest thrift store to grab me a NES. I've decided to enter to exciting world of NES modding and I need a "Sacrificial Lamb", so that I can ~~TASTE IT'S VIRGIN BLOOD~~ get a good feel for it's inner workings. So stay tuned...

The hardest thing about blogging for me is thinking about things to blog about. I've tried for a whip up a post about video games for a week now.(This being a video game blog and all...) So I've decided to throw out a mixed-up of all the half completed posts and other miscellany I had stewing over the past week.

Here it is, in no particular order.

Metroid 2: I ain't gonna give up on you yet.

In my last post I kissed Metroid 2 goodbye forever. Now it seems like I kinda jumped the gun on that one. After thinking about it for a few days, I said "fuck it" and decided to replace the battery myself anyway since I've got nothing to lose. I already opened it up and took the battery out.(which was aggravating as fuck, just like I thought) Now I've got to go to Radioshack and try find a replacement battery that hopefully isn't too TOO expensive.(I ain't paying more than 6 bucks.)

Gundam Wing re-watch :EP 1 - 20

Just some quick notes.

-Relina is Completely batshit insane. Because she has her inner monologues OUT LOUD, IN PUBLIC.

-20 episodes in and Wing Gundam has yet to be called by it's name. Its either "Heero's Gundam" or Gundam 01.

-Wufei whined about not being good enough to pilot Shenlong, but yet he still went around kicking people's asses with no hesitation at all.(Cuz he's such a badass)

-The first 5 episodes of this show are terrible, because they're totally nonsensical and have awful dialog.

-Why do all the characters in this show know every single detail about everything? Are the all Newtypes or something?

The Trieze bathing manservice in that one episode was NOT appreciated.

Other random stuff

-Metroid: Zero Mission has a hard mode worthy of my respect.

-Grandia 3 is one of the worst RPGs I've ever played.

-Gundam: Encounters in Space's singleplayer mode is crap, but multiplayer kicks ass.

-Super Smash Bros. Brawl sucks. Melee is faster and has tighter controls.

-Sonic 4 looks promising but I'm not keeping my hopes up.

-I may start an RPG Maker project with a friend of mine.(But I'm not paying for it...)

-If Game Maker is so easy, why can't I figure anything out?

-Why does Wendy's Triple Baconator cost 9 dollars for just the burger?

-How does Taco Bell run out of ground beef?

-Why do Japanese people think drills are cool? They seem pretty gay to me.

-Video games today are way too slow.

Mourning a fallen comrade

Today's kind of sad day for me. After finishing my Metroid Prime run, I figured I'd dust off the ol' Gameboy Advance and pop in Metroid 2: Return of Samus for a warm-up run today.

Everything started off normally enough. I started a new game and made my way through the beginning part and killed the first metroid like usual. Then I went to the save station and saved my game; pretty routine stuff. Then I just shut the game off to go find my complete Metroid 2 map, you know the one that has the entire game and mapped out and whatnot.

That's when the horror began! When I turned the game back on it started me back at the very beginning of the game again! I then went back to the title screen and chose a different file, thinking I would just pick up from there to practice. That file was turned out to be a new game as well. I decided to do some testing and that's when it hit me, the save battery was dead and the game is now incapable of holding a save file.

So now it seems I'm screwed, since nobody offers to repair gameboy game paks anymore. I could try to replace the battery myself but, looking at the process one must go through I think its not worth the potential frustration. If a buy another game I just run the risk of that battery dieing too, wasting money I don't really have. There's emulation but I really dislike playing games on the P.C. since I don't a very comfortable set up here in my room.

So I might as just say goodbye to my oldest games. It's been fun to have you ruin my childhood with you obnoxious difficulty, but I always kept coming back for more.

Metroid Prime : My (not so) Hard Mode overall thoughts.

Not too long ago I wrapped up a Hard Mode run on my aging Metroid Prime file. I hadn't played it in a few years and was pretty rusty so I went through on normal to re-familiarize myself with item locations and whatnot. I finished that run and decided to tackle hard mode thinking that I was ready for the "REAL THING".

See back in my day, (the early 90's) when a game had difficulty settings you knew what you were getting into. Hard mode then meant more (and often smarter) enemies and even rearranged levels that made thing like Platforming a pain in the ass, but it was at the end of the day you had tons of fun.

Metroid Prime's hard mode had none of this. Metroid and Metroid 2 didn't need a hard mode; they were already enough to COMPLETELY RUIN YOUR CHILDHOOD FOREVER! While Prime's hard is really more like TEDIOUS MODE, Samus takes more damage and enemies have way more health. They don't get any smarter or faster or anything. The same tactics you use in normal mode pretty much carry over to hard mode ; most enemies are beaten in the same fashion except they just now take more hits and require you to be LITTLE bit more cautious.(Except the beam troopers, those guys are even bigger dicks and fighting groups of them was the one of the only real challenges of hard mode.)Recovery items appear much less frequently, but since enemy AI is the same I didn't get hit much and didn't really need them anyway.

As far as bosses go its the same deal, only now killing them takes much more time. Unfortunately, Metroid Prime's bosses are somewhat a weak point in an otherwise excellent game. They have their set attack patterns that you have to dodge, then you exploit their weak point, and then repeat the process until you win and get your power-up. In hard mode this takes WAY longer than it should, I couldn't help myself from thinking "Jeez this is boring as shit, I should of beat this already..." I takes about me close 20 minutes just to beat the final boss simply due to obnoxious amount of health both forms have, but yet they're not anymore difficult to take down. Plus you run the risk of running out of missiles, and God help you if that that happens because beam weapon do almost no damages against the Metroid Prime. (Its final form also takes about 8 phazon beams instead of 4.)

So, I can sum Metroid Prime's hard mode in one word... Disappointment. Its still great game mind but you, but they could of at least spiced up hard mode more a little bit.

Final Statistics and other random junk

-Number of deaths: ZERO
I almost died during Metroid Prime's second form, that was the only time my health got dangerously low in the entire run.

-Item collection rate: 100%
Got everything. Took me a while, but did it.

-Total Game Time: 10 hours 25 minutes
I really dragged my ass this time because fighting of groups of the beam troopers in the Phazon Mines take a fucking eternity.

-Most aggravating moment: Fighting Wave Troopers
THEY... JUST... DON'T... FUCKING... DIE!

-Most aggravating boss: The Metroid Prime(both forms)
I already mentioned why above, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?!

-Favorite moment: When it was finally over.
THANK GOD

-Would I do it again?: Maybe if I buy Metroid Prime Trilogy. MAYBE
